Prevent Blindness Ohio Recognizes Dr. Rafat Ansari

Dr. Rafat Ansari (Bio Sciences & Technology Branch) was recognized at the Vision Research Scientific Forum for his voluntary service on the selection committee of “Young Investigator Student Fellowship Awards for Female Scholars in Vision Research” held in Columbus, Ohio, on November 18, 2009.

The event was hosted by Prevent Blindness Ohio (PBO). The Fellowship Program is designed to provide support for outstanding female scientists (MD, OD, and PhD students) committed to pursuing biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research careers to prevent blindness and preserve sight.

NASA Tech Brief Published on Small X-Band Oscillator Antennas

A NASA Technical Brief entitled “Small X-Band Oscillator Antennas” was published in the November 2009 issue of Tech Briefs Magazine, Vol. 33, No. 11. The authors are Dr. Richard Q. Lee (retired), Dr.Félix A. Miranda (Antenna & Optical Systems Branch), Mr. Eric B. Clark (Photovoltaics & Power Technologies Branch), Mr. David. M. Wilt (formerly with Photovoltaics & Power Technologies Branch, now at Kirtland AFB), Dr.Carl H. Mueller (Analex/Qinetiq NA), Ms. Carol L. Kory (Analex/Qinetiq NA) and Dr. Kevin M. Lambert (Analex/Qinetiq NA).

The article discusses the details of a novel prototype of a solar powered X-band oscillator antenna developed to demonstrate the feasibility of such devices as compact, low-power consumption building blocks of advanced, lightweight, phased arrays that would generate steerable beams for communication and remote sensing

Software Release Award Received for Aircraft Engine Gas Path Diagnostic Methods Benchmarking Software

Don Simon received a NASA Software Release Award for the GRC developed Propulsion Diagnostic Method Evaluation Strategy (ProDiMES) software. This software provides a standard propulsion gas path diagnostic benchmarking problem and a set of evaluation metrics to enable users to independently develop and evaluate diagnostic methods.

Additionally, ProDiMES contains a set of blind test case data to enable the side-by-side comparison of diagnostic approaches developed by multiple users. After a period of independent development and evaluation, NASA will hold a workshop to invite ProDiMES users within the engine health management community to share results and lessons learned.

This work is supported by the NASA Aviation Safety Program, Integrated Vehicle Health Management Project.

NASA Invention and Contributions Board Space Act Award Received for Pulsed Detonation Engine Performance Code

Dr. Dan Paxson received the NASA Inventions and Contributions Board Space Act Award for the technology disclosure LEW-18383-1, entitled “Simplified Pulse Detonation Engine Performance Code.” The computer code is a simplified (lumped volume), spreadsheet-based pulsed detonation engine (PDE) simulation which predicts semi-idealized, design point performance of a defined configuration in terms of flow rate, specific thrust and specific impulse.

The quick run-time for the code allows the PDE designer to evaluate PDE performance at various flight points and perform preliminary sizing and operation frequency estimates. The lumped volume model was presented at a JANNAF (Joint Army Navy NASA Air Force) meeting and has been accepted for publication in the JANNAF journal.

NASA Space Act Monetary Award Received for Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Traveling-Wave Tube Amplifier (TWTA)

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) traveling-wave tube amplifier (TWTA) team from Glenn Research Center and L-3 Communications received a NASA Space Act Monetary Award for significant scientific and technical contributions to the mission.

The contribution is a novel high power, high efficiency, highly reliable K-Band TWTA capable of transmitting high volume science data and images from the LRO spacecraft to Earth in support of the Exploration Systems Mission. A flight and a proto-flight model TWTAs were delivered by NASA Glenn Research Center to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

ASME Committee Leadership Awarded to Dr. Timothy Krantz

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Power Transmission and Gearing Committee elected Dr. Timothy Krantz (Tribology & Mechanical Components Branch) for committee leadership. He will first serve as Vice-chair and then as Chair after completion of the Vice-chair term. The responsibilities include serving first as the Technical Chair, followed by serving as the Conference Chair for the next two ASME Power Transmission and Gearing Conferences.

Dr. Hani Kamhawi Receives Silver Snoopy Award

On October 28, 2009, Dr. Hani Kamhawi (Propulsion & Repellants Branch) received the Silver Snoopy Award for his work with the Plasma Contactor Units (PCUs) that protect the International Space Station from excess charge build up. In addition to daily monitoring of the performance of the two PCUs currently in orbit, in August 2009, Dr. Kamhawi went to extreme lengths to ensure the Clamp Voltage Acceptance test of Orbital Replacement Unit PCU-003 conducted in Glenn Research Center’s Vacuum Facility 5 was successful and completed on schedule.

Dr. George Ponchak Approved Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques

Dr. George E. Ponchak was nominated and approved to be the next Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques at the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society’s October 2009 Administrative Committee meeting in Rome, Italy.

His term starts June 1, 2010 and will run for four years. Dr. Ponchak has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters over the past four years, and his term as editor of that journal ends on January 1, 2010. Dr. Ponchak will be only the third person to have served as editor of both journals.

Dr. Ponchak was also nominated and elected to serve a three term on the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Administrative Committee. The IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society is one of the largest IEEE societies with approximately 13,000 members.

It sponsors over 200 technical conferences per year, including the largest and most important conference related to the field of circuits and systems in the frequency range of few mega-hertz to terra-hertz, throughout the world, publishes two technical journals and one magazine, and awards grants to students. As one of the 21 elected members on the Administrative Committee, Dr. Ponchak will responsible for these technical activities.

Dr. Bansal Appointed to Committee of American Ceramic Society

Dr. Narottam P. Bansal of the Ceramics Branch has been appointed a member of the Subcommittee on Book Publishing of the American Ceramic Society for a 3-year term. The purpose of this committee is to work with the society’s commercial books publishing partner (Wiley) to build a jointly owned series of books covering science and technology of glass and ceramics.

Miranda, Simons Receive Award at Wall Street Journal 2009 Technology Innovation Awards Ceremony

Dr. Rainee N. Simons (Electron & Opto-Electronic Devices Branch) and Dr. Félix A. Miranda (Antenna & Optical Systems Branch) received an award on October 13, 2009, at the Wall Street Journal 2009 Technology Innovation Awards ceremony, taking place in conjunction with the Dow Jones VentureWire Technology Showcase 2009.

At the ceremony, they received their award for the invention, “Miniature Implantable Radio Frequency System for Real Time Telemetry from Microelectromechanical Systems Based Sensors and Actuators,” which was selected as a runner-up in the wireless category. The system provides wireless telemetry from miniature embedded sensors requiring no batteries. NASA foresees uses in such areas as astronauts’ space suits, health monitoring and bridge maintenance.
